Highways in Greece

The length of the public road network in Greece is 117,000 km, of which 107,406 km are paved roads. The length of the motorways is 2,311 km.

Toll roads

In Greece there is a road charge based on the distance traveled. The administration of individual sections of the motorways is the responsibility of different management companies.

Payment is made before entering the toll road section.

The level of the tariffs depends on the type of vehicle. Vehicles are classified based on their height and number of axles.

Egnatia motorway

The Egnatia motorway is the European  E90 motorway that  connects Igoumenitsa in western Greece and Alexandroupoli in the east (on the border with Turkey).

Morea’s Highway

The Moreas motorway is part of the European  E65  and runs through the Greek cities of Korinthos, Tripoli and Kalamata.

Olympia Autobahn

The Olympia motorway is part of the E65 European road   . It starts in Athens, runs through Corinth and ends in Patras.

Ionia highway

The Ionia Odos motorway is part of the European  E951  and is operated by Nea Odos. It connects Ioannina (Egnatia motorway) and Patras (Rio-Antirion bridge) and is 196 km long.

Attiki highway

The Attiki Highway is the ring road around Athens. It connects Athens Airport with the Pathe and Olympia motorways. The highway is 65 km long.

Aktio tunnel – Preveza

The Aktio Preveza Tunnel offers a fast drive between Aitoloakarnania and southern Greece along the coast. It is the first and so far only underwater tunnel in Greece. The length of the tunnel is 1,570 m (including 909 m under water) and has 2 lanes in each direction.

Bridge Rio – Antirio

The Rio-Antirion Bridge is located at the intersection of two main highways: Athens-Corinth-Patras-Kalamata and Ioannina-Antirion, which connect the main cities of Greece and are part of the European motorway network.

The bridge is 2,880 m long and has 6 lanes. 2 lanes in each direction plus 2 emergency lanes.

Parking in Greece

A new parking control system has been introduced in the center of Athens since November 2006. The parking lot is marked with blue lines for permanent residents, with white lines for visitors and with yellow lines for special situations and professional needs.

Payment is due on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The maximum parking time is 3 hours and the price for the first 2 hours is € 0.5 per hour. For 2.5 hours – 4 € and for 3 hours – 6 €.

Violation of the parking rules – 80 €, withdrawal of a driver’s license for 10 days and a technical passport with numbers for 20 days.

Parking in places for drivers with disabilities – 150 €, withdrawal of a driver’s license for 10 days and a technical passport with numbers for 10 days.

Standard speed limits in Greece (unless otherwise stated on signs). Cars and Motorcycles:

The maximum permissible blood alcohol level is  0.5 ‰  .

If the blood alcohol level is more than 0.5 ‰ and less than 0.8 ‰, the driver will be fined € 200.

If the blood alcohol level is more than 0.8 ‰ and less than 1.1 ‰, the driver will be fined € 700 and his driver’s license will be revoked for up to 3 months.

If the blood alcohol level exceeds 1.1 ‰, a fine of 1,200 €, a driver’s license of up to 6 months and a possible imprisonment of 2 months will be imposed. Repeated alcohol consumption of more than 1.1 ‰ within two years – a fine of € 2,000, driving license disqualification for up to 5 years and possibly imprisonment for 6 months.

For drivers with less than 2 years of experience and for motorcyclists, the permitted blood alcohol level is  0.2 ‰  .

If the blood alcohol level of such drivers is more than 0.2 ‰ and less than 0.8 ‰, the driver will be fined € 200.

The low beam is optional during the day and required at night.

It is recommended to use the low beam in poor visibility conditions caused by bad weather (fog, snow or rain). In this case, it is forbidden to move only with the dimensions included.

Fog lights can only be used alone or together with low beam in fog, snow or heavy rain.

Transportation of children

Children under 3 years of age are only allowed  to  travel if they use child restraint systems that are suitable for their weight.

Children under 12 years and under 135 cm may only be transported on the rear seats using special means (child seats, boosters) with which they can be fastened with seat belts.

The use of seat belts is compulsory for front and rear passengers   .

The use of a helmet is mandatory for the driver and passenger when riding a motorcycle or scooter   .

It is forbidden to use a telephone communication device that is not equipped with a technical device that allows negotiation without the use of hands while the vehicle is in motion.

Unleaded petrol (  95 and 100 octane  ) and diesel (  Petreleo  ) are available in Greece. There is no such thing as leaded gasoline. The number of petrol stations is limited.
