The length of the Latvian public road network is 73,592 km. Of which with a hard surface – 20,131 km.
There is no road toll in Latvia.
Land with special payment
Only entry to the Jurmala tourist area is chargeable. The participation fees are valid from April 1st to September 30th. The rest of the time – from October 1st to March 31st – entry to Jurmala is free.

The number of entries is not limited during the period of validity of the pass. The ID cards are checked with video cameras. The fine for entry without a passport is € 50.

Parking in Riga
Almost all parking spaces in the center of Riga are chargeable. Parking spaces RP SIA Rigas satiksme – Parking is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In Zone R (Vecriga) the opening times are daily from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. The parking spaces can be used free of charge for the rest of the time, as well as on Sundays and public holidays.
The cost of parking in Riga varies depending on the zone in which it is located.
As of April 1, 2015, the following parking fees for parking in Riga have been set:

The cost of parking in Vecaki is € 2.00 for the entire period from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (from May 1st to September 30th).
You can pay for parking in parking meters or by SMS.

The maximum time for free use of a paid parking lot during operation is 5 minutes. The maximum time allowed for free use of the paid parking space after the payment period has expired is 15 minutes.

Main traffic rules of Latvia
Standard speed limits in Latvia (unless otherwise stated on signs). Cars and Motorcycles:
- in the village – 50 km / h
- outside the village – 90 km / h
- on the way – 110 km / h

The maximum speed in the residential area is 20 km / h.

The maximum permissible blood alcohol level is 0.5 ‰ .
If the blood alcohol level is more than 0.5 ‰ and less than 1.0 ‰, the fine is € 430 to € 640 and the deprivation of the right to drive a car for 12 months.
If the blood alcohol level is more than 1.0 ‰ and less than 1.5 ‰, the fine is € 850 to € 1,400 and the deprivation of the right to drive a car for three years.
If the blood alcohol level is more than 1.5 ‰, the fine is € 1,200 to € 2,000, which removes the right to drive a car for five years. The same punishment threatens in case of refusal to be examined for the presence of alcohol or narcotics or psychotropic, toxic or other intoxicating substances in the human body.
For drivers whose driving experience does not exceed 2 years, the maximum permissible value is 0.2 ‰ .
If the blood alcohol level of such drivers is more than 0.2 ‰ and less than 0.5 ‰, the fine is 210 to 430 € and the deprivation of the right to drive a car for up to six months.

The low beam is required around the clock all year round. The fine for driving without dipped headlights during the day is € 10.
For trips without dipped headlights at night or in poor visibility, the fine is 40 €.

Transportation of children
When transporting children less than 150 cm tall, vehicles with seat belts must be fitted with special chairs or stands suitable for the child’s age and weight.
Violations of this rule result in a fine of 30 to 70 euros.

Make a phone call
It is forbidden to use a phone, tablet or any other mobile device that does not have the technical ability to negotiate hands-free while driving.

If the speed is exceeded by more than 50 km / h, the driver’s license will be withdrawn from 6 months to 2 years in addition to the fine.
Unleaded petrol (95 and 98) and diesel fuel are available in Latvia. Gas filling stations (LPG) are available.
Canned gasoline is allowed to be carried in a car on the territory of the country.

The procedure for crossing the border of the Republic of Latvia:
- Cross the barrier at the entrance to the control point and go to the desired corridor (red or green), depending on the availability of the items to be declared.
- After approaching the checkpoint, turn off the engine and wait for the customs officer to inspect the car.
- After the inspection everyone should go to the passport control window with their passports and get a stamp in the passport about crossing the border. In addition to their passport, the driver must also present the “registration certificate” for the car and the “green card” insurance.
According to Article 9 Part 1 of the Road Traffic Act, only vehicles whose technical condition complies with the requirements of the standards laid down in the legislation may be used in the territory of Latvia.

The driver must have a document confirming the passage of the technical inspection of the vehicle (diagnostic card – for vehicles registered in Russia) and present it at the request of the police, border guards or customs officers (in the customs zone) in the absence of the above Document, employees of the State Border Guard have the right to refuse to cross the border – to enter the Republic of Latvia with this vehicle.

Driving without a warning sign, first aid kit or fire extinguisher will result in a fine of 10 € or a warning.

The use of winter tires in Latvia is mandatory for vehicles with a total weight of up to 3.5 tons from December 1st to March 1st. If not, a € 30 fine.
The minimum profile depth is 3 mm. If the tread depth is less than the minimum allowed, the fine will be between € 55 and € 140.
Studded tires can be used from October 1st to April 30th.
The fine for using studded tires between May 1st and October 1st is € 30.
